Other about West Caicos

West Caicos sailing - an unique experience

Many visitors arrive to the Turks & Caicos by boat and enjoy the pristine waters. Private boaters are reminded that they must clear customs and immigration upon arrival. The most popular tourism route by sea is aboard one of the dozens of cruise ships that now call on Turks and Caicos. You will arrive at a state of the art cruise ship terminal in Grand Turk and be able to enjoy a wide variety of activites, attractions and shopping. Private boaters can use a number of facilities in Providenciales, most notably the full service Turtle Cove Marina that features extensive docking facilities, fuel, lodging, restaurants, washing facilities, Internet access as well as complete entry facilities. Other marinas in Provo can be found at Leeward Marina , South Side Marina , and Caicos Marina and Shipyard . South Dock is the main entry facility for large commerical boats and cargo. To protect the rare whales in the area and to protect the fledgling whale-watching industries of the Islands, the Executive Council has approved an official “Code of Conduct” covering our contacts with whales and dolphins. Based upon regulations adopted by Australia and New Zealand, and with considerable input from experienced whale-watching operators in the TCI, the following guidelines will go into effect from the 1st of March 2004. Single vessels engaged in whale watching shall not have more than 20 persons on board.Boats should not approach within 100 metres of a whale. Do not approach mothers with calves. No more than three vessels should attempt to watch a whale or group of whales at one time. Aircraft should not operate closer than 450 metres (1500 feet) above or near a whale. Cruise ships should not stop to watch whales. Major marine construction would not be allowed to occur during whale migration months. Water sports operators will require a permit to engage in whale-watching activities. Passengers should not swim with, touch or feed dolphins or other marine mammals. Water sports operators, commercial vessel operators and those involved in marine construction are advised to familiarize themselves with the Policy document, copies of which are available at DECR offices in Grand Turk, South Caicos and Providenciales.
