West Caicos scuba diving - a reason for your vacation
This uninhabited island is situated on the west side of Provo, about 35 minutes from the dock. There are six miles of protected leeward side walls, approximately 100-150 yards from shore with more than 2 dozen dive sites. The wall starts from 35-45 feet and drops to approximately 6,000 feet. You will see incredible sponges, coral formations, large grouper, Caribbean reef fish and stingrays. There are great spots to encounter large pelagic such as reef sharks, spotted eagle rays and turtles. On some occasions you will see manta rays and hammerheads. The diving conditions are excellent for all levels and the visibility is rarely less than 100 feet. 2 or 3 tank daily trips are available as well as night dives. During the interval the operators generally provide a tasty lunch, either served on the beach or in one of the beautiful coves. You can relax and enjoy the tranquility, or if you are feeling energetic you can explore the island and visit an 1800's plantation ghost town or Lake Catherine in the middle of the island. The snorkeling on the reef and near the shore provides more opportunities to enjoy the variety of marine life in the warm, clear water. If you are clearly advanced or experienced, buddy up and the "pool is open". Most experienced divers will have average dives of over 60 minutes, and be limited primarily by deco time and of course the depth limit depending on your level of certification. For the first dive or two of the week, if you do not have total confidence navigating the dive site, feel free to trail one of our guided groups from a distance. You have your freedom, without the hindrance of having to find the boat at the end of the dive. Generally speaking, most experienced divers have a natural propensity to want to "go deep", it usually does not pay off to go below 100 feet (unless of course your chasing something big-- a six pod of eagle ray?). Most wall terrain starts to diminish (from a coral and wildlife point of view) at about 100 feet. Most of the big fish are up at the thermal forms between 40 and 70 feet. Since most of the action is in this 40 to 70 foot range so the natural preference is to make a longer dive rather than a deeper dive. We'll let you decide for yourself however.
